This week, the Bridgerton actor starred in Burberry’s trench coat campaign. If you want a slice of that same transitional outerwear gold, M&S’s sub-£100 option has your back.
On Tuesday, Jonathan Bailey featured in Burberry’s blockbuster “Trench: Portraits of an Icon” coat campaign promoting, you guessed it, the House’s iconic trench coat. It was shot in black and white and the actor threw it over his suit like a cape. It was all very slick, suave, and sexy.
The campaign landed at a good time. We officially enter Spring this month, which means it’s nearly time to hang up your big winter coat for the foreseeable future. This is when a trench can be your best friend – and the Bridgerton actor knows that very well. Its origins go back to the 1800s, when it was created as a practical outdoor garment. But it was refined and moved closer to its contemporary form during the First World War, where it was seen as a lighter and more practical option to previous heavyweight coats. And Burberry was kitting out officers with its gabardine outerwear.
The trench coat has moved beyond its military use. It’s big and swishy – the type of thing you can wear over your tailoring to channel your inner 1980s Wall Street tycoon, but is also going to level up the chill stuff nicely with its tailored structure. Plus, it’s lightweight, ideal for layering, and it makes for a pretty good shield against the unpredictable weather that can come at this time of year.
But for all its strengths in the Trench department, Burberry is expensive. Which means unless you’re one of those lucky enough to grab a spot on the front row of its fashion shows, or your bank account is looking especially healthy, you might need to shop for alternatives. Don’t worry tireless menswear soldier – we’ve got you.
The search won’t land you in the coat-hunting trenches. M&S has a very suitable solution. Because yes, it has more than Percy Pigs in its locker, and has been keeping people dry since the 1920s with its outerwear designs. For its latest take, the brand looked to its archives in Leeds to cook up a solid knee-length car coat (similar to Bailey in Burberry’s campaign) crafted from sustainably sourced cotton and treated with water-wicking Stormwear tech. This bad boy is cut below the knee and comes with a boxy, roomy fit – ideal for pairing with lightweight knits, but with enough space for something heavier should the need arise. Oh and did we mention that it costs £95?
Nice one Jonathan Bailey for cutting the ribbon on trench coat season. And thank you M&S, for proving it doesn’t always need to break the bank. If you like what you see, you can find M&S’s trench coat here.
